Topic 1, Assignment #2 : Genetics in the News

Assignment 2: Current Events - Genetics in the News

For this current events assignment, you will need to identify and summarize a news story that relates to a topic in genetics. You might look for a news story that describes a topic that we have already discussed, or it might relate to topics that will come up later in the course (see the syllabus). The specific focus is up to you as long as it connects in some way to genetics.

Assignment Guidelines:
• Use an online news search engine to identify current stories related to a topic in genetics (posted within the last 18 months).

Feel free to use any news site, but some suggestions include:
• http://www.sciencedaily.com/search/

• Using the news site's search tool, enter in one or more key words. Examples of key words include: genetics, DNA, gene, chromosome, genome, and mitosis. Other possibilities include stem cells, cloning, cancer, polymerase chain reaction, genetically modified organisms, etc. Feel free to be creative in choosing key words; you might be surprised to find what is making the news!

• Choose a news story that most interests you, and summarize one or more key points of this article in your own words. The length of your summary should be between one to three paragraphs. Include the web link to the original news article in your written summary.

Bring your summary to class to share with your peers.
